SACC Scholarship for Summer Study

of Slovak Language & Culture

 

Each scholarship of up to $1,000 funds the payment of tuition, fees, room, & board, to attend (in-person or online) one of the below summer programs to study Slovak language & culture. All applicants must be U.S. citizens. Upon completion of the program, scholarship recipients will be asked to share reflections about their experiences, either live or through video, with SACC. The programs are open to students and motivated learners ages 18 and over.

Pittsburgh-Based In-Person or Synchronous Online Summer Program:

Summer Language Institute (SLI) at the University of Pittsburgh

The University of Pittsburgh's Slavic, East European, and Near Eastern Summer Language Institute (SLI) offers a unique intensive Slovak summer program that includes a study abroad option in Bratislava.

The Slavic department at the University of Pittsburgh prides itself on being a principal center for the teaching of Slovak language and culture in all of North America. SLI is the only US-based summer intensive program to offer Slovak at beginner through advanced levels.

- 6 weeks of intensive Slovak at SLI in Pittsburgh or online (roughly $4,900 tuition + fees; room & board are separate)

- followed, if available, by 4 weeks of optional continued language study and cultural immersion in Bratislava (roughly $9,060 altogether)

SLI also offers scholarships for the summer program, and we encourage students to apply for both an SLI as well as an SACC scholarship.

SLI accepts undergraduates, graduates, and highly-motivated non-affiliated learners.

Slovakia-Based Summer Programs

1) Summer University of Slovak Language & Culture

 

-- Accredited program in its 30th year & affiliated with Comenius University

-- If enough students in the North American time zone at the same language proficiency level enroll, the program will create a session during North American business hours; therefore, we recommend enrolling if interested

-- Historically a three-week program taking place in July; in 2021 will be online for a duration of two weeks

-- Includes language course work (beginner through advanced) + extra-curricular activities + excursions

-- Tuition: Online 350 euro; if in-person, approx. $1,500 (incl. tuition, room & board)

2) Studia Academica Slovaca (SAS)

 

-- Accredited program in its 57th year & affiliated with Comenius University

-- Classes begin on first Monday of August (August 2, 2021 this year)

-- Two-week (online) or three-week (in-person) program, depending on format, with classes & activities offered Monday through Saturday

-- If online, classes begin for North America-based students at 9am EST

-- Includes language course work (beginner through advanced) + extra-curricular activities + excursions

-- Open to students ages 18 and over

-- Takes place in Bratislava at Comenius University; students reside in dormitories

-- Tuition roughly 700 euro for classes only, plus 20 euro/day for accommodations if in-person (altogether roughly $1,500)
